Vector Paint is a free digital paint program utilizing an innovative interface that allows rapid creation of high quality digital paintings from reference images. Vector Paint allows the user to focus on high level design while the program controls the placement of individual brush strokes. The user controls the application of paint by specifying important stroke directions and various painting styles. The program features a preview window to allow rapid development of a digital painting. Automatically generated results can then be manipulated within the program, allowing the user to change individual strokes within the final image.

This program was created as part of my Senior Thesis project working under Professor David Forsyth at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Right now the project is relatively under wraps until I determine what I want to do with the application. It will either become a GIMP plug-in or be released as a stand-alone application, possibly following a publication on the topic.

Here are some sample images. About 100,000 brush strokes. Created in about 30 minutes.

Polarity

Polarity was the UIUC Student Chapter of ACM SIGGRAPH‘s 2008 Engineering Open House Project. The project was created by students with no formal training in computer animation. The UIUC SIGGRAPH student chapter provides tutorials in computer animation and annually creates an animation showcasing what the members have learned. Polarity features the story of a polar bear fighting the boredom of fishing and is a greatly shortened version of the original story board.
